The YouTube algorithm is your friend. I promise. Here's why

The Algorithm Isn’t Your Enemy.

My friend! How have you been?

Today, I want to talk about the YouTube algorithm with you because, oh boy, you won’t believe how many questions I still get about it.

‘‘How do I hack the algorithm for more views?’’

‘‘Why does YouTube hate my channel?’’

‘‘The algorithm shadowbanned me!’’

They think it’s an unpredictable force that decides who wins and who gets buried. But here’s the truth: the algorithm isn’t your enemy.

It’s your ally once you understand how it works.

Let’s break it down into simple steps you can apply today.

The Algorithm’s Goal: Keep People Watching

YouTube’s primary mission is to keep viewers on the platform as long as possible. Every decision it makes revolves around this.

Every minute a viewer spends on the platform longer is a minute they can show an ad.

YouTube wants to make money and keep viewers on the platform as LONG as possible. Ram this in your brain! 🧠

What this means for you:

  • If your videos engage viewers and encourage binge-watching, the algorithm will recommend your content to more people.

  • Your goal is to create videos that make viewers want to stay, click, and explore your channel.

A great way to extract multiple views from one viewer is by making predictable content.

Stay within one lane of topics. Think:

  • Rebuilding wrecked cars

  • Garden makeovers

  • Painting model trains

  • Workouts specifically for seniors

End your videos with strong calls to action that direct viewers to another one of your uploads that is closely aligned with the video they just watched.

Longer session times = more impressions for you. Because remember: YouTube wants viewers on their platform for as long as possible!

2. The Power of Viewer Satisfaction

The most important metric YouTube measures is the most invisible as well.

The algorithm is constantly trying to measure how much your video satisfies your viewer.

It looks at click-through rate, average view duration, and the viewers’ session time AFTER watching your video and if they engage (like, comment, subscribe).

But, there is a common misconception that these individual metrics are important.

They are not.

Your video can still go viral if it has low average view duration or low CTR.

The individual metrics say nothing, the combination of them all tell the real story to the algorithm.

If viewers watch just 10% of your video on average, but they stay on the platform longer than if they watch your competitor, your video will most likely still get the most impressions.

So, how do you improve your content for viewer satisfaction?

By knowing the viewers better than they know themselves. Study your ideal viewer intensely. Know what makes them tick. Understand what they want to see.

Optimize your videos to be binged by your ideal viewer, and you will see momentum most of your competitors will be jealous of, I promise you.

3. Consistency Builds Momentum

Momentum is the most powerful thing to grow a channel FAST. This is exactly how I grew multiple channels from 0 to 100,000 subscribers within a year in 2024.

But you need to understand this first: YouTube or the algorithm doesn’t give a rat’s ass about how much you upload. If you upload a banger video once a year, it can still go mega-viral.

But to build momentum, you need to put the reps in. You need to get data. You need to understand what your ideal viewers like and what they don’t like

The fastest way to do that?

Find the ideal upload cadence that brings the balance between quality and quantity.

Start with a schedule you can realistically maintain, even if it’s just once a month.

But understand: more videos equals more feedback.

4. Learn from the Data

Your YouTube analytics CAN be a goldmine if you know where to look. They’ll show you exactly what’s working and what needs improvement.

Key analytics to focus on:

  • Top-performing videos: What do they have in common? Write down what patterns you see in your comment sections. Double down on similar content.

  • Drop-off points: Where are viewers leaving your videos? Write down why you think they left.. Fix those moments in future uploads.

The bottom line is this:

The YouTube algorithm is designed to reward creators who make engaging, valuable content that keeps viewers on the platform.

Focus on creating binge-worthy videos, optimize your packaging (titles + thumbnails), and stay consistent. Build momentum.

Soon, you’ll see the algorithm working for you, not against you.
